SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Isaiah Howes' RBI single in the eighth inning plated the winning run as the University of Louisville completed a sweep of Seton Hall with a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon. Colby Wark, Kyle Hollander and Trystan Magnuson combined on a four-hitter for the Cardinals.
For the 19th time on the season, the Cardinals (28-11, 11-4 BIG EAST) scored in the first inning, when Logan Johnson, Daniel Burton and Howes rolled consecutive singles to take a 1-0 lead. Johnson extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his one-out single.
For the third time in as many games in the series, the Cardinals retired the side in order in the first, as Wark logged a 1-2-3 first, getting John Walsh looking to end the frame.
Wark put two on to open the second on a walk and a hit batter, but picked up a strikeout and rolled a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
The Pirates (18-19, 5-10 BIG EAST) knotted the game at one on Walsh's RBI single to left in the third.
Chris Cates' two-out single in the fifth snapped a stretch of 13 straight retired by Pirate starter Corey Young.
Wark exited after a career-long six innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk, striking out four. He was replaced by Hollander (1-1) who retired the side in order after a leadoff single in the seventh to pick up the win.
Johnson reached on a one-out error in the eighth, and Burton followed with a single that moved Johnson to third and set the stage for Howes who drove in the only two runs of the game for the Cards.
Young (2-4) left with two on and one out in the seventh, and surrendered two runs, one of which was earned on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five in 7.1 innings and was saddled with the loss. Dan McDonald came in out of the pen and allowed the Howes single and struck out one in 1.1 IP.
Trystan Magnuson worked around a pair of errors, a hit and a walk in the final two innings, inducing inning-ending double plays in the eighth and ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Burton and Howes each had two hits for the Cards.
The Cardinals will look to complete a season sweep of Kentucky when they visit the Wildcats in Lexington on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET to complete an eight game road swing. The UK game will be televised on Fox Sports South(Insight 70 in Louisville).
