Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville (3-5-1, 2-3-0) men's soccer team fell 1-0 to St. John's (6-2-1, 3-1-1) Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. Louisville played a stellar second half and had the game-equalizer called back in the 85th minute of play.
"I thought we played a tremendous second half," said head coach Ken Lolla. "After giving up a goal in the first half we were still in the game. I am very encouraged by our ability to apply pressure to St. John's at the end. But unfortunately it did not result in a goal."
The field conditions were very wet after severe storms passed through the Louisville area the last 36 hours. St. John's got on the board when Georgios Sapnos crossed the ball to Jeff Stepan who hit the left corner of the net in the 26th minute. Louisville had a slight 4-3 shot advantage to end the first half but went into the lockerroom with a 1-0 deficit.
The second half was fairly even until Louisville applied pressure in the 82nd minute of play and held possession most of the final eight minutes. Freshman Othaniel Yanez was on the far right side and crossed the ball to Frank Jonke who shot the ball between the keeper's legs for the game-equalizer then was called for offsides in the 85th minute. Louisville had another chance to score the equalizer when Yanez crossed the ball to Fred Braun in front of the goal but Braun slipped on the wet grass and was unable to make contact.
Louisville finished the game with slight 7-6 shot advantage and a 1-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper David Simolike finished the game with three saves while St. John's keeper Jason Landers finished with three saves as well.
Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27 as they travel to Cincinnati for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Bearcats.
