LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mother Nature controlled the fate of the women's soccer match between the University of Louisville and DePaul Friday night at Cardinal Park. Louisville controlled play and powered their way to a 2-0 lead before lightning entered the region at 8:19 and halted play.
The game was stopped in the 63rd minute and delayed until 10:21 p.m. ET, when the game was cancelled. It has not been determined if or when the game would be rescheduled. None of the stats from the match will count toward the season totals, and if the game were to be rescheduled, a full game would be completed as though the teams had never taken the field.
The unfortunate part of the equation for the Cardinals is that if the game had proceeded past the 70 minute mark, it would have been an official game, even if cancelled after that point in time.
In the actual game action that preceded the delay, Jen Avila netted what would have been her fourth goal of the season, just under eight minutes into the contest to put the Cards up 1-0 on a nice feed from senior Jamie Craft.
Avila, a junior from the Chicago area, then netted her second goal of the game when Lindsay Boling's corner kick was punched out by DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca to Avila who fired a shot past LaRocca far post for the 2-0 Cardinal advantage.
Louisville outshot the Blue Demons 13-2 in the first half and 17-2 before play was stopped.
The Cards will travel to South Bend, Indiana to face top-ranked Notre Dame Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. U of L returns home for a four-game home stand beginning Friday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. when St. John's visits Cardinal Park.
