LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the first time in program history, the University of Louisville women's soccer team appears in the NSCAA /adidas National Rankings, receiving votes that place the team 29th in the preseason poll.
"We're very excited that the program has earned national respect, but fully understand that it is only a preseason poll," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We still have a full season ahead of us and look forward to the challenges within the BIG EAST as well as our non-conference schedule."
The Cardinals are one of five BIG EAST teams in the poll, second only to the ACC which placed six teams. Notre Dame is ranked fifth, UConn 16th, West Virginia 18th and Marquette 25th in addition to the Cardinals. Defending national champion Portland is the top-ranked team in the poll.
Louisville is set to open the season Wednesday in Morgantown, West Virginia where they will face the 18th-ranked Mountaineers in an exhibition match beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Cards will host Nebraska in the Third Annual Jenna Cooper Memorial Match at Cardinal Park on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in a second exhibition. Tickets for that match are $3 with all proceeds benefitting the Jenna Cooper Memorial Fund.
The regular season opener is set for Friday, August 25 in Cardinal Park against Ohio at 5:00 p.m.
Season tickets to U of L soccer games are available by calling the athletic ticket office at 502.852.5151.
Louisville went 11-8-0 last season with a 6-5-0 mark in the BIG EAST, advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship.
Senior forward Jamie Craft, who was recently named to the preseason All-BIG EAST team, lead the team in goals and points in each of her first three season at U of L and is one of nine starters that return from the 2005 team.
