Over the course of the summer weeks, members of the University of Louisville women's soccer team will be making entries into a summer journal, keeping the fans up-to-date on what they are up to as they prepare for the 2006 season. Our first installment features Amy Seng, a senior defender from Centennial, Colorado who was recently named to the 2005 COSIDA Academic All-America Third Team:

This summer I am doing an internship with the US Olympic Committee with the Paralympic Division out in Colorado Springs. Even though it is not Denver, I still love being in Colorado and so far I really like the internship and the people in the office. It's kind of scary though- I actually have to work 40 hours a week and I realize that I am one step closer to actually becoming an adult and having a real job. While I like the job so far, I did not particularly like the car ride out here. Luckily, I had Heather (who is another senior on the team) help me drive the 16 hours it takes to get out here. Anyone who has driven with Heather knows that she does not mess around and yes, at times I found myself gripping the handle or trying to press an imaginary break on the passenger side. But as any girl knows, when you get two best friends together they can talk for hours so the drive wasn't too bad.
Well I am officially a senior now. Looking back it seems like the time just flew by. Then I start remembering all the lifting, meetings, bus rides, hotels, games, meals, practices, ice baths, bruises, 6:30 a.m. workouts, and all the other things that make up college athletics and suddenly the time seems a little less fast! I also am thinking about all the things I will miss. I will miss the laughing and dancing in the locker room that only a room full of 20 girls can produce. I will miss seeing Jamie Craft dribble through four defenders to score a game winning goal. I will miss watching Monique Gjini control the midfield with the composure of an upperclassmen. I will miss seeing Jen Avila slide tackle a ball away from an opponent at the last minute to stop a play. What I will miss most is the drill of stepping on the field every game day with my second family and thinking to myself that there is no other place I would rather be for the next 90 minutes.
OK, enough of that sappy stuff, though because my excitement over this upcoming season overshadows any sadness I have about being done. We have such a great group of core players returning and even better, we have an awesome incoming class that will improve our team. I know that I can speak for all the seniors when I say that we want nothing more than to end our careers by making an appearance at the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program's history. This season is an accumulation of all the sweat and tears that current and former Cardinals have put into this program to make it what it is today and it is time for us to take the next step. I can't even express the excitement that I feel even now when I am just thinking about the season and the potential we have as a team. I want everyone, fans, parents, alumni to feel the excitement that is stirring inside of us, inside of the team. This is our year to upset a ranked team. This is our year to be regionally ranked. This is our year to make the NCAA tournament. This is our year.
