CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Louisville women's soccer team wrapped up their spring schedule with a 1-1 tie against Vanderbilt in the feature game of the Blue Chip Showcase on Saturday.
The Blue Chip Showcase, one of the top recruiting events in the nation, is a premier tournament which attracts teams from all over the country.
"Playing in the feature game of the tournament was a great opportunity for us. Some of the top high school players in the country were in attendance," U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson said.
In the match-up with 2005 NCAA qualifier Vanderbilt, the Commodores picked up an early goal in the first five minutes of the game.
With starting goalkeepers Deana Waintraub out recovering from knee surgery and Tiffany Hansen mending a broken bone in her hand, U of L field player Lauren Podvin filled in as GK for the Cards. After giving up a fluke first goal, Podvin played an exceptional 85 minutes despite never having played goalkeeper.
In the second half, U of L forward Shannon Smyth was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick. Monique Gjini converted the PK to tie the game up.
The Cards dominated the majority of the second half and put together some great scoring chances.
"Playing 90 minutes with one substitute was a big challenge," Ferguson added.
"I thought our team responded well to Vanderbilt's athleticism and depth. To play that kind of quality soccer, without a goalkeeper, against a NCAA Tournament team, was a good way to end our successful spring season."
