LOUISVILLE, Ky. - UCONN starter Tim Norton tossed a complete game four hitter to lead the Huskies past the University of Louisville 10-2 Friday night in the opening game of the weekend series at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Huskies (15-8, 5-2 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Pat Mahoney's RBI single plated Erik Turgeon.
Louisville (11-15, 3-1 BIG EAST) responded in the bottom of the frame, tying things at one on Logan Johnson's fifth home run of the season. The junior third baseman belted a 2-0 pitch well over the fence in right field, the first home run given up by Norton this season.
In the top of the second, Turgeon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Bryan Maler and upping the lead to 2-1, and a solo home run by UCONN's Dennis Donovan with two away in the third made it 3-1 Huskies.
UCONN pushed across an unearned run in the seventh and another solo home run, this one off the bat of DH Matt Karl extended the lead to 5-1.
The Huskies put the Cards away with a five run ninth that featured a solo home run by Austin Wasserman and a bases-clearing double by Maler.
Jorge Castillo second home run of the season, a solo liner to right in the ninth closed the scoring.
Norton walked just one, while striking out eight and facing just six over the minimum in his second complete game of the year, improving his record to 3-2.
Cardinal starter Scott Jenkins (2-3) worked 4.1 innings in the loss, his shortest start of the season. He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out one.
David Torcise gave up an unearned run on two walks, and exited the game after knocking down a line drive back up the box in the seventh. He pitched an inning and a third.
Griffin Bailey tossed the final three innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, striking out one.
Castillo managed two of the Cardinals' four hits, while five UCONN players logged multi-hit efforts.
The same two teams will meet Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for game two of the series when U of L's B.J. Rosenberg (3-3, 5.13 ERA) is opposed by the Huskies' Rich Sirois (2-1, 3.45). Admission is free.
