
Jenkins Vaults Cards to 2-0 Win Over Rutgers Friday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville starter Scott Jenkins tossed eight scoreless innings, scattering four hits to lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 shutout of Rutgers in the first ever conference game for the Cardinals as a member of the BIG EAST Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Jenkins, who improved his record to 2-2 and lowered his season ERA to 0.88, has now worked 17 consecutive scoreless innings, facing six over the minimum on the afternoon. The junior from St. Xavier High School walked four and struck out four.
Chris Cates singled with one out in the first and was plated on a double to the gap in left by Daniel Burton to make it 1-0 Cards.
Nick Haley's two-out RBI single in the eighth plated Derrick Alfonso who lead off the inning with a walk for the 2-0 margin of victory.
Brian Halford notched his second save of the season, giving up a hit in the ninth, while striking out two. It was his 17th career save, placing him alone in second place in the Cardinal record books.
Rutgers (6-11, 0-1 BIG EAST) starter Steve Holt fell to 2-3 on the season as the hard-luck loser, allowing a run on eight hits and five walks, striking out one in six innings.
Joe Baione worked two-thirds of an inning, walking one and Chris Lillis gave up a run on a hit and a walk, while fanning one in an inning and a third.
Louisville improves to 8-14 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST with the win. It is the fourth shutout on the season for the Cardinal pitching staff.
Cates, Johnson, Burton and Michael Urti each had two hits for the Cards.
Haley added a walk to his RBI single, the 113th free pass of his career, placing him alone in fifth in the U of L record books. He now has 205 career hits, 11th all-time.
The same two teams will meet Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET in Patterson Stadium for game two of the weekend series. Admission is free.
