BOCA RATON, Fla. - Five Florida Atlantic pitchers combined to shutout the University of Louisville 6-0 on Sunday and complete the weekend sweep of the Cards.
The Cardinals return home to Louisville for their home opener when they host Xavier on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. ET. It is the first of eight at Jim Patterson Stadium where admission is free to all home games.
A hit batter was followed by three singles to plate two runs in the Owl (5-4) half of the first to give FAU a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Hafer hit a two-out solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to 3-0.
In the sixth, Alex Silversmith's two-run single made it 5-0. An RBI single off the bat of Anthony Albano in the seventh closed the scoring.
Joel Schmal (2-1) scattered five hits over six innings, walking one and striking out six. Four relievers combined for the final three innings, allowing three hits the rest of the way.
Mike Lynn (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk, striking out one in 5.1 innings. B.J. Rosenberg gave up a hit and struck out one, allowing two inherited runners to score in two-thirds of an inning.
Griffin Bailey, pitching for the third time in four games, allowed a run on three hits and struck out one in an inning.
Brian Halford fanned two in a perfect eighth. It was Halford's 73rd career appearance, tying him with Jason Hobbs or fourth place all-time. Bailey was on for the 65th time, putting him in a three-way tie for eighth.
The Louisville (0-4) offense, which has now stranded 41 batters in the first four games left 11 on in the loss.
Daniel Burton had his second consecutive three-hit game for the Cards, while Derrick Alfonso added two safeties.
The Cards also learned that freshman third baseman Chris Dominguez suffered a fracture of his left arm in Saturday's game and will be out eight weeks. It is early enough in the season that a medical redshirt is an option for Dominguez.
