TAMPA, Fla. - The 17th ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team scored with a little under a minute left in overtime to capture a 1-0 victory over USF Friday night.
Louisville improves to 11-2-1 overall and 6-2-0 in BIG EAST play. The 11 wins ties the 1993 and 2005 teams for the second most wins in a single season in school history.
"I give USF a lot of credit tonight. They battled hard for 100 minutes" said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We weren't as sharp as we'd like to be, but getting three points on the road is difficult in the BIG EAST."
The Cards put immediate pressure on the Bulls (6-7-1, 3-5-0 BIG EAST) when Monique Gjini put a shot on goal just eight seconds into the match.
Amy Seng sent a shot high in the 3rd minute and Jen Avila, Lindsay Boling and Heather Engel also got shots off in the first 14 minutes before the Bulls put any heat on the Cards.
The game winner came when Seng sent a free kick into the box and it was headed simultaneously by Louisville's Mallory Lampson and a USF defender and found the back of the net.
It was officially ruled and own goal.
U of L out shot USF 11-5 in the first half, 8-2 in the second half and 20-9 on the evening.
"Joanna Haig was outstanding tonight in goal," Ferguson added.
The junior keeper made six saves for the Cards to secure her fourth shutout of the season and third in four games.
"Jessica Mello and Amy Seng did a great job anchoring the back line tonight," Ferguson said.
The Cardinals are now 3-0-1 in overtime games this season.
Louisville will hit the back end of this brutal road swing by traveling all the way to Milwaukee where they will face Marquette on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
