LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville women's soccer team has hired Paul Rogers as its new assistant coach. Rogers' primary responsibility will be to work with the goalkeepers.
"I am extremely excited about the addition of Paul Rogers to our staff," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"Paul brings a wealth of goalkeeping experience as both a player and a coach. His ability to teach and coach will certainly allow us to develop the current keepers we have as well as recruit the top goalkeepers in the country," Ferguson added.
Rogers comes to Louisville after a stint at Tulane where he held the same duties last season. He has been the camp director for the Soccerplus Goalkeeping School, the largest goalkeeper's school in the U.S., for the past eight years. There he has worked with both U.S. and international goalkeepers and coaches as well as overseeing the operation of the camp and training the staff members.
He has earned a UEFA B license and certificate, USSF B license, English Football Association Football Leaders Certificate and his NSCAA Goalkeeper's Certificates.
His coaching background includes a stint as the goalkeeper coach for the Indiana Youth Soccer Association OPD for three seasons. He also worked as the goalkeeper coach at Carmel United, IUPUI and Dynamo FC U17 girls team in Indianapolis.
A very accomplished player, Rogers spent one season at the University of Indianapolis where he was named All-Conference and All-Region, starting every game between the pipes. He then played one year at nationally-ranked South Florida.
In 2003 he represented his native Great Britain team in the World University Games in Daegu, South Korea.
Rogers also had a stint playing professionally as the goalkeeper for the A-League Indiana Blast.
Rogers is from Brighton, England and received his bachelor's degree in sport administration in 2004 at Indianapolis.
Q & A with Paul Rogers
Q: Tell us a bit about your playing career?
A: I grew up in England as a Goalkeeper. As a youth player I was a member of the England schools set up. After which I was involved with numerous pro clubs in England and the US. The highlight for me was playing for Great Britain in the World University games in Dageu South Korea.
Q: What was it like growing up in England?
A: At home football is a way of life, the talk of everyone, you are surrounded by it 24/7. It's great!
Q: How and when did you know you wanted to make coaching your career?
A: I always thought I would be a teacher if I wasn't involved in football, so going into coaching was a natural progression. After I injured my back and the chance to continue playing professionally diminished, and coaching was the next best thing.
Q: What is your philosophy on goalkeeping?
A: Simple, keep the ball out the net! Work hard on the basics, your handling and footwork. Be a student of the game, and nothing is impossible.
Q: How do you feel you can contribute to the UofL women's program as they move into the BIG EAST?
A: I feel my passion for the game and dedication to the players, coaching staff and program on and off the field, will help us push forward into the BIG EAST and on to the national scene.
Q: Why did you come to the University of Louisville?
A: The set up here at U of L is similar to that of a pro club at home-top coaches, top stadium and great training facilities. The athletic environment, as well as the academic reputation will definitely help us to recruit the best players in the country and compete for both BIG EAST championships and NCAA appearances.
