LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville women's soccer team has released its 2005 schedule, the first season for the Cardinals as a member of the BIG EAST. The 20 game slate features a pair of home exhibition matches against Nebraska and Kentucky, as well as a home date with the defending NCAA Champions, Notre Dame.
"I am very excited about our 2005 schedule because it is very challenging and it allows us to compete at a national level," noted Head Coach Karen Ferguson, who is entering her sixth season in the Ville.
"The BIG EAST schedule along with our non conference schedule will be very tough but it is exactly what we need as we continue to elevate the status of our program," Ferguson added.
Louisville will open the season on August 14th at 2:00 PM ET, hosting the Cornhuskers for the second straight season. Last year the Cards set a new attendance record at Cardinal Park in the Jenna Cooper Memorial Match . Cooper was a Louisville native who played at Sacred Heart High School in Louisville and Nebraska, was fatally shot in Lincoln on April 25, 2004.
The Cards will then face the Wildcats for the first time since 1996, when the teams meet in an exhibition on August 18th at 7:00 PM ET in Cardinal Park.
The regular season will open on August 26th in Cardinal Park when U of L hosts Butler. The Cards will hit the road for the first time in September when they face Conference USA foes Tulane and UAB in a tournament in Birmingham.
Louisville's first BIG EAST match, ironically, will be at Cincinnati against the Bearcats on September 15th.
The rest of the BIG EAST ledger features trips to DePaul, Providence, Georgetown and Villanova. Ferguson and Assistant Coach Sarah Popper will also pay a visit to their alma mater UCONN on October 2nd.
U of L hosts the National Champion Fighting Irish on September 25th, USF, Marquette, Seton Hall and Rutgers, the final match of the regular season on October 23rd in Cardinal Park.
The BIG EAST will be split into two eight team divisions, with the top five in each division advancing to the BIG EAST Tournament. The 10 teams will be seeded based on points accrued in BIG EAST matches, with three points being awarded for a win and one for a tie.
Louisville will be in division B with Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall, DePaul, Notre Dame and Cincinnati.
Last season the Cards posted a school record 12 wins (12-5-3), advancing to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament in Saint Louis.
