HATTIESBURG, MS - TCU starter Sam Demel went the distance, limiting the University of Louisville to three hits in leading the Horned Frogs to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals in the opening round of the 2005 C-USA Tournament at Pete Taylor Park.
Horned Frog (38-18) DH Matt McGuirk belted a stand up double to lead off the bottom of the second inning and eventually scored on an RBI single by Austin Adams to give TCU a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals (32-23) responded with a pair of runs in the third without the benefit of a hit. Chris Cates and Greg Taylor drew back-to-back walks and moved up a station on a sac bunt by Boomer Whiting.
An RBI groundout by Nick Haley tied the game at one, and before the next pitch could be delivered, a balk was called on Demel, scoring Taylor from third and giving U of L a 2-1 lead.
Keith Conlon's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth brought home Shelby Ford to tie the game at two.
In the TCU seventh, Matt Carpenter hit a one out double and pinch runner Ryan Pack scored on a single by Kyle Dahlberg to break the tie.
Two Cardinal errors lead to an insurance run in the eighth, extending the advantage to 4-2 Frogs.
Demel (5-4) fanned nine and walked three in his first complete game of the season.
Louisville starter B.J. Rosenberg (5-4) logged seven solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts, but took the loss.
Griffin Bailey surrendered an unearned run in the eighth on a hit ad struck out one in an inning of work.
J.T. LaFountain singled and doubled, while Jorge Castillo's infield single in the ninth was the other U of L hit.
The Cards will face the loser of Wednesday night's #3 Southern Miss/#6 USF game in an elimination game on Thursday at 1:30 PM ET.
