
Kent State Foils Cardinal Sweep

LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville baseball fell behind Kent State 5-0 in the fifth, and that proved to be the final margin as the Cards fell to the Flashes 8-3 Sunday.
U of L (2-1) won the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday.
Will Vazquez stole home in the fourth, prior to a long three-run home run by Greg Hiller to centerfield extended the margin to 4-0.
Andrew Davis singled in a run in the fifth for a 5-0 lead before the Cards broke through in the sixth.
Catcher Michael Urti doubled with two out in the inning, and shortstop Chris Cates followed with a double, driving in Urti. Boomer Whiting then singled Cates home to cut the margin to 5-2.
Vazquez singled home another run in the seventh to make it 6-2 Kent.
With two away in the bottom of the seventh, Logan Johnson doubled to right center and was plated by Isaiah Howes' single up the middle trimming the lead to a three-run deficit.
In the ninth the Flashes sealed it with RBI singles by Joe Tucker and Kurt Eichorn.
Justin Valdes (0-1) started for the Cards and took the loss, tossing 4.2 innings, and allowing five runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Griffin Bailey gave up an unearned run in 2.1 frames, on two hits and a walk.
Jon Harbridge struck out two in a perfect eighth inning. Freshman Zack Pitts surrendered two runs on two hits without retiring a batter and Brian Halford wrapped things up, giving up a pair of hits and a walk to go with a strikeout in an inning of work.
Chris Carpenter (1-0) earned the win for Kent with 5.2 innings of work, surrendering two runs while scattering nine hits and three walks.
Ryan Davis was touched for a run on a hit, striking out two in an inning, while Jason Seelman allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.
Andrew Davis earned the save with an inning and two-thirds out of the pen, striking out two.
Johnson, Urti and Cates paced the Cards with two hits apiece, but U of L stranded 14 runners on the damp afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cards host Eastern Kentucky Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium, with free admission to all fans.
