NEW YORK, NY - Sophomore forward Jamie Craft has been selected to the Soccer Buzz Magazine National Elite Team for play during the week of September 13, 2004. The honor coincides with U of L's team ranking of 15th in the Great Lakes Region, the first such ranking in school history.
Craft, who was Conference USA Freshman of the Year last season and a preseason All-C-USA selection this season, scored four goals on the week as the Cards went 2-1. The elite team consists of 11 players selected on a weekly basis for their performance on the field.
"I am really proud of Jamie, as this is well deserved honor for her," observed fifth-year Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"One thing that jumps out at me as I look at the list is that Jamie is in some wonderful company. We will continue to expect great things from her," Ferguson added.
In a win at Murray State, the sophomore racked up her first career hat trick, scoring the game winner 1:21 after the Racers had cut the Cardinal lead to one goal. She scored the three goals on just four shots.
On Friday against Wright State, Craft tied the game at one on her only shot of the game in the 66th minute.
In Sunday's win over Xavier, Jamie had seven shots, four of which were on goal. If not for an illegal handball in the box, Craft would have scored the game winner in overtime. The subsequent penalty kick was converted by the Cards for a 1-0 win in OT.
Craft has seven goals in seven games, one off of last year's season goal total, good for a tie for 18th in the nation. She is tied for 28th in the nation in scoring, averaging 2.29 points per game.
"The regional ranking and Jamie's honor raises awareness that the Louisville women's soccer program is on the rise," Ferguson noted.
As a team, the Cards are 27th out of 300 in scoring offense nationally, averaging 2.86 goals per game. Louisville is off to a 5-2 start to open the season.
Louisville will open Conference USA play on Thursday in Tampa against South Florida at 7:30 p.m., and continue on to Birmingham to face UAB on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. U of L will return home on October 1st when they host Tulane at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park. Admission is free.
