LOUISVILLE, KY - University of Louisville women's soccer Head Coach Karen Ferguson recently returned from China where she served as an assistant coach for the United States U-21 National Team from March 17-29. The group went 3-0 in matches in Shanghai and Huai'an, including a 2-0 win over the Chinese National Team that is currently attempting to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
"It was a thrill to be invited to help out, but the magnitude of the event didn't really hit me until our National Anthem was played," noted Ferguson.
Chris Petrucelli, Head Coach at the University of Texas heads the U-21 team.
"He is great to work with. I learned a lot in the short time that I worked with him," Ferguson added.
"I am looking forward to working with him again in the upcoming events."
Ferguson will continue to assist the U-21 team in a pair of training camps in Carson, California April 16-25 and June 18-27. The team will also compete in an international tour in Brazil, May 20-31 leading up to the primary annual event for the U-21 team, the 2004 Nordic Cup in Iceland July 19-30, a tournament the US has won the last five years running, and six of the last seven.
During the training camps in California, the U-21 squad will play matches against the 2004 US National and Mexican National Teams, both of which will compete in the Athens Olympics.
Ferguson, who will open her fifth season as head coach of the Cardinals this fall, has bettered the previous season's winning percentage each of her first four years, including a 7-9-2 mark in 2003 with a team that did not feature a single senior.
