Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer defeated Memphis 4-3 in double overtime Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,135 in Cardinal Park. Freshman Marco Terminesi scored the game winning goal off an assist from senior Simon Bird in the third minute of the second overtime period.
"Memphis made it a great game," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "They played a great attacking style in front of a huge crowd. It was a great team performance tonight. It is hard to point to just one person but Ryan Pomeroy really stood out. He was involved in almost every play. Freshman Marco Terminesi also had a great night, he had an assist in the opening minutes of the second half and then scored the game winner. Dayton will be a tough opponent for us on Sunday and it should make for an interesting final."
The Tigers jumped out in front early, Harrison Kiser scored an unassisted goal in just the third minute of play. The Cardinals countered in the 12th minute when freshman Jonathon Williams scored off a pass from Bryan Wells. Memphis scored seven minutes later when Omar Jarun dribbled the ball up the middle of the field to score. Cardinal junior Matt Rose knotted the game in the 27th minute off a pass from Terminesi.
Senior Simon Bird put the Cards up 3-2 in the 46th off an assist from Terminesi. In the 69th minute of play, the Tiger's Jarun scored again off an assist from Andy Metcalf.
The Cardinals will play Dayton in the second round of the Musselman Hotels Classic on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2:20 p.m. Dayton defeated UW Milwaukee in the first game 3-2.
