Louisville, Ky. -
The University of Louisville men's soccer fell 2-1 to Dayton in the finals of the Musselman Hotels Classic Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals had a chance to tie it with two shots in the final minutes, but shots were just wide.
"It was a disappointing performance," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "Not to take anything away from Dayton, they played a great game. We played the first 20 minutes on our heels after Dayton scored early. We played well in the first 20 minutes of the second half but then it looked like we got tired. We could have earned a tie but we were up against a good Dayton goalkeeper."
Offensive MVP Chris Rolfe put the Cards on their heels early, scoring off an assist from Mpoki Tenende in the first 15 seconds of play. Cardinal keeper Brad Sokolowski collected two saves in the first half to hold off the Flyers from another score.
The Flyers' Jeff Suzuki scored what would be the game-winning goal off an assist from Dan Hartwig in the 75th minute of play. The Cardinal offense came alive in the final minutes of play with freshman Marco Terminesi scoring off a cross from Simon Bird in the 86th minute of play. Bird had a chance to tie it a minute later with a free kick but the shot was high.
Bird and Terminesi were named to the Musselman Hotels Classic All-Tournament team along with freshman Jonathon Williams. Dayton's Denny Clanton earned Defensive MVP and Chris Rolfe earned Offensive MVP honors.
Louisville will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 as they travel to Lexington to take on Kentucky at 7:30 p.m.
