
Women's Soccer Wins Exhibition Opener 2-1

LOUISVILLE, KY - Freshman Lindsay Scheer notched a goal and an assist, lifting the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the St. Xavier High School boys junior varsity team on Tuesday. Sophomore Sarah Core added a goal and junior Lisa Martin had an assist for the Cards.
"This is a fantastic way to start the season," noted Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"Everyone had a chance to prove themselves, and the competition within the team for playing time has intensified," added Ferguson.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, and captured a 10-1 edge in shots in the first period.
Louisville outshot St. X 9-3 the rest of the way, coming from behind to secure the victory.
Scheer executed a flip-throw-in from the far corner, launching high into the air in front of the goal, where Core gathered the loose ball for the tying goal at 71:37. Continuing the pressure, Martin lead Scheer up the middle where she beat a defender to the ball and slid the ball into the lower right corner of the net, giving the Cards the lead.
"The team has really come together off the field, and that has lead to the same result on the field," said Martin.
"Everyone wants to be there on the field for each other," Martin added.
Sophomore Angie Gangel started in net and made one save, while junior Meredith Miller added a save, playing the final 60 minutes. Scheer and Martin each had three shots on net, while junior Kim Jents had two. Freshmen Jamie Craft and Heather Engel each had one shot on goal.
Louisville will next face Middle Tennessee State in a second exhibition match on Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama at 4:30 p.m. ET, before opening the regular season at home on August 31 against Butler at 1:00 p.m. Admission to all home matches are Cardinal Park are free, and fans to the opener will receive a magnetic schedule.
