
Fernandez Named All-Region, Signs With Devil Rays

LOUISVILLE, KY - University of Louisville senior pitcher Carlos Fernandez has been named to the ABCA All-South Region second team as the relief pitcher. The Miami native also signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and will report to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League this week.
Fernandez is the Cardinals all-time leader in appearances, taking the hill 81 times in his four seasons, including a record-setting 32 times his senior season.
His 1.21 2003 season ERA and 3.70 career ERA are second on both U of L lists, while his 12 saves are a single season record, and his career total of 16 is second all-time.
He also posted a 5-1 record his senior season, enjoying one of the top seasons of any reliever in the nation.
He is the fourth Cardinal to earn All-Region, joining Dan Kopriva and Charlie Allen who both made the team in 1992 and teammate Mark Jurich who earned second-team honors after last season.
The Renegades, located outside of Fishkill, New York, is a short-season single-A team.
Josh Bolen, who was drafted by the Devil Rays in the 46th round will report to the Princeton Devil Rays, a member of the Appalachian League, a short-season, rookie-A ball organization with those leagues opening the season next week.
Other Cardinals who are currently playing pro baseball include pitcher Grant Williams, who is with Cook County of the Frontier League(Ind.), infielder Adam Haley, a member of the South Bend SilverHawks of the Midwest league(A), catcher Tony Taylor with Florence of the Frontier League, infielder Key Voshell with Richmond of the Frontier League and pitcher Sean Green who is playing for the Visalia Oaks in the California League(A).
