LOUISVILLE, KY - A seven-run second, and strong pitching by Brian Halford and Steve Ayers lifted the University of Louisville Cardinal baseball team to a 12-1 win over IPFW Tuesday night at Cardinal Stadium.
Dave Williams Jr. reached on a bunt single to open the Cardinal first, extending his hitting streak to a career best 17 games. Boomer Whiting followed with a base hit, and a walk to Mark Jurich loaded the bases. With two down, Morgan Bojorquez was hit by a pitch to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Cards tallied the seven runs on six hits and four Mastadon errors as 12 players stepped to the plate. Back-to-back doubles by Jurich and Ron Braun and a sac fly by Ryan McKinnon capped the scoring, putting the Red and Black up 8-0.
A sacrifice fly by Williams extended the advantage to 9-0 in the fourth before a solo home run by IPFW's Zach Walton put the Mastodons on the board in the fifth.
An RBI double by Bojorquez in the bottom of the fifth got the run back and put the Cards in double figures, and a LaFountain sac fly made it 11-1 Cards.
Logan Snyder's double to right scored Adam Mallette, who singled for his first career hit, in the ninth to close the scoring.
Halford (3-0) allowed just the one run, scattering six hits in six innings without a walk and four K's.
Ayers earned his first career save with three innings of one-hit ball, fanning four.
Mastodon starter David Zachary (3-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk in 1.1 frames. He struck out two. Aaron Van Allen, Keegan Laycock and Kellen Marshall also pitched for IPFW.
Whiting and Haley each had three hits for the Cards while Bojorquez and LaFountain also enjoyed two-hit efforts. Senior pitchers Carlos Fernandez and Mike Eilers each had an at-bat while Scott Barber played right field in the ninth and Fernandez made the final out with a smooth play at second base. Eleven different Cardinals had a hit in the game.
Williams, Bojorquez and LaFountain each drove in two runs and Williams and Braun scored two runs apiece.
The Cards will host Morehead State on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. Admission and parking are free and the game can be heard in Louisville on WAVG 1450 AM.
