
Barber Clips Blazers 7-1, Cards Sweep Series

LOUISVILLE, KY - Louisville Cardinal junior Scott Barber tossed a complete game four hitter, striking out a career-high 10, in leading the Cards to a 7-1 win over UAB on senior day, completing the series sweep.
Senior third baseman Mike Budak celebrated the day in style with his eighth and ninth home runs of the season, going 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBI.
Louisville (35-13, 19-8) has won six straight and nine of its last ten, and now has four sweeps in Conference USA play this season. The Cards are a half game out of first place in Conference USA.
Budak homered in his first at bat of the day, a solo shot with one out in the second for a 1-0 Cardinal lead. He hit one out in each game of the series, and extended his career-high hitting streak to 12 games.
Louisville designated hitter Ken Tirpack then walked and catcher Fernando Isa doubled, putting runners at second and third for senior second baseman Scott Gerlach.
Gerlach lined a shot to center for a sacrifice fly, scoring Tirpack for a 2-0 advantage. Dave Williams Jr. followed with an RBI triple down the left field line, and he scored on an RBI single by J.T. LaFountain for a 4-0 advantage after two complete.
In the sixth, Budak singled and Isa doubled him home for a 5-0 ledger.
Barber allowed a one-out single in the second, and proceeded to retire 14 in order before a solo home run by first baseman Matt Womble made it 5-1 Cards.
Williams Jr. doubled to lead off the seventh and eventually scored on a sac fly by first baseman Morgan Bojorquez for a 6-1 lead.
The final run of the game came on Budak's second bomb of the day, leading off the eighth inning, a 3-2 pitch he drilled over the fence in right center.
Barber(3-4) faced just four over the minimum, allowing base runners on just the four Blazer hits. He had just four three-ball counts on the afternoon, retiring every batter on 3-2 pitches.
Three of his ten strikeouts were looking, and the final two outs of the game were by way of the K. With the exception of the home run, no baserunner reached second base on Barber.
Blazer(15-37, 6-21) starter Jeff Brown(1-3) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings, he struck out four.
Andre Parks allowed a run on a hit and a walk in an inning of work, and Joe Yarbrough struck out two, getting all three outs in the eighth after Budak's home run.
Williams Jr., LaFountain, Budak and Isa each had multiple hit efforts for the Cards.
The Cardinals will travel to Lexington to face Kentucky on Monday at 6:00p.m. ET. before wrapping up the home season with a doubleheader against Akron on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. The regular season wraps up with a Thursday, Friday, Saturday series at East Carolina before the C-USA tournament in Kinston, N.C., May 21-26.
