
Cardinal Nine Splits Twinbill with Horned Frogs Sunday

LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville Cardinal baseball team split a doubleheader with TCU losing the opener 13-4 and rebounding to take the nightcap 4-3 in seven inning games. TCU won the series two games to one.
TCU (22-23, 13-8) hammered the Cards in the opener, jumping out for three in the first, one in the second and two in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage. A single run in the fifth lead to a six-run sixth that featured a solo home run by first baseman Walter Olmstead and two-run shots by DH Jake Duncan and centerfielder Marshall Wilson to take a 13-0 lead.
Louisville (27-12, 14-7) managed just three hits off Horned Frog starter Clayton Jerome through five.
In the sixth, U of L scored all four of its runs. Dave Williams Jr. doubled to lead off, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by J.T. LaFountain. Mark Jurich walked and Morgan Bojorquez hit an infield single to load the bases. Designated hitter Curt Stewart was hit by pitch to plate the second run of the inning.
Mike Budak drove in run number three on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by catcher Fernando Isa closed the scoring.
Jerome(7-3) was the winner, allowing the four runs on seven hits and a walk in six frames, striking out four.
Josh Ring(4-3) took the loss for the Cards giving up four earned runs on six hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out three in his first start of the season.
Garrett Estabrook tossed 2.1 innings and was touched for seven runs, five of which were earned on seven hits and a walk. Willie McKenzie gave up one unearned run on two hits and two walks to go with a strikeout in 1.1 innings.
In the nightcap, Louisville scored first for the first time in the three-game series getting a 2-0 lead on Bojorquez' ninth home run of the season. The two-run shot scored LaFountain who had singled to lead off the inning.
An RBI single by centerfielder Dan Cunningham score Budak in the fourth for a 3-0 Cards lead.
A two-run single by TCU catcher Justin Hatcher in the fifth cut the lead to 3-2, but a sacrifice fly by Cardinal left fielder Josh Bolen in the fifth gave the Cards a 4-2 cushion.
A solo home run by TCU third baseman Mike Settle to lead off the ninth made things interesting, but Carlos Fernandez shut the door, getting the final two outs and his second save of the season.
Starter Zach Jackson (5-1) was strong in the win, allowing three runs on eight hits while fanning two in 6.1 innings.
TCU starter Patrick Newburn(2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings.
Louisville will next make up the February 27th game against Western Kentucky that was rained out, Tuesday at Cardinal Stadium, with first pitch at 4:00 p.m. ET. Admission is free.
