HATTIESBURG, MS - Mike Tisdale twirled his third complete game of the year, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks to lead the Louisville Cardinals to a 3-1 win over first place Southern Miss (24-12, 10-4) Saturday.
Tisdale(5-1) was virtually untouchable, retiring 18 in order at one point and striking out six. He surrendered a solo home run to left center with two out in the ninth by catcher Brad Willcutt, as he was the only baserunner to advance as far as third.
Mark Jurich roped his eighth double of the season into right center with one out in the third, moved to third on a ground out by Morgan Bojorquez and scored on a error to put the Cards (20-10, 9-5) up 1-0.
Shortstop Adam Haley singled with one out in the fourth, and J.T. LaFountain was hit by a pitch. They advanced on a wild pitch, and Jurich ripped a double down the right field line to plate them and give the Cards a 3-0 advantage.
After a one out single in the first, Tisdale set down 18 in a row before a one out single in the seventh. The first out of the third was a spectacular diving stab by center fielder Dave Williams Jr. The next batter drove a pitch over the fence in left, but Cardinal left fielder Josh Bolen reached over the fence and brought the ball back for a superlative second out of the inning.
A pair of safeties in the eight was the only other real threat, but a fly out to left ended the inning.
After the home run in the ninth, Tisdale struck out first baseman Griff Israel to end the ballgame.
Haley had three hits in the game, while Jurich had two safeties.
Bob McCrory(4-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Reliever Brent Leach gave up two hits in three scoreless innings, striking out two.
The same two teams will meet for the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
