
Baseball Bashes Butler

LOUISVILLE, KY- The University of Louisville baseball team swept a doubleheader from Butler, winning a seven-inning game 8-3 and capping it with a nine-inning 8-2 win, Friday at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals(4-1) pounded out 27 hits, including four doubles, a triple and three home runs in the pair.
In the first game, shortstop Adam Haley singled to lead off the first inning and scored on a double by junior outfielder Josh Bolen. Sophomore Mark Jurich singled home Bolen in the third to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, catcher Fernando Isa singled with two outs, Bolen doubled and they both scored on a single to right by first baseman Morgan Bojorquez. Jurich then followed with his first home run of the season, a towering shot to right center on a 3-1 pitch, making it 6-0 Louisville.
The Bulldogs(1-2) scored a pair of runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth before Bolen shut the door on Butler with his first home run of the season, a laser to straightaway centerfield for the 8-3 final margin.
Starter Scott Barber (1-0) went the distance in his first win of the season, allowing the three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. Barber retired the first eleven batters of the game and was perfect in four of the seven innings.
Butler starter Aaron Phillips(0-1) gave up six runs in four innings of work on 10 hits and two walks. He struck out four.
Bolen and Jurich were both 4 for 4 with three RBI and a stolen base in game one. Bolen had two doubles and scored three runs, while Jurich socked one two-bagger, and scored once.
Haley scored a pair of runs while Bojorquez had two RBI in the first game.
Butler scored an unearned run in the first to take a 1-0 lead in game two, but Bojorquez answered with his first home run of the season to lead off the second, tying the game at 1-1.
The Cards scored three in the fifth on singles by Dave Williams Jr., Haley, J.T. LaFountain, Bolen and Bojorquez, making it 4-1 Louisville.
U of L extended the lead in the seventh after a one out triple by Jurich, an RBI double by Bojorquez, a Carlos De la Osa single, a walk to catcher Ken Tirpack, an RBI single by Ryan McKinnon and a two-run single by Adam Haley.
A single run in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk made for the final 8-2 margin.
Louisville starter Garrett Estabrook (1-0) picked up the victory, throwing five strong innings in which he gave up one unearned run on four hits and three walks. Estabrook fanned five.
Carlos Fernandez continued his early-season excellence, tossing three hitless innings in which he walked one and struck out four. Josh Ring pitched the ninth, giving up a run on two hits and two walks while getting all three outs via the strikeout.
Butler starter Pat Neshek(0-1) gave up four runs on ten hits in his five innings of work, picking up the loss in game two.
Bojorquez was 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored in game two. Haley was also 3 for 4, driving in two and scoring once. Haley now has a 14-game hitting streak dating back to last season. LaFountain and McKinnon each had a pair of hits in the Cards fifteen-hit attack.
Louisville is scheduled to face Indiana State at 1:00p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Cardinal Stadium. Admission is free.
