A six-run second inning, marked by a grand-slam off the bat of center fielder Mike Hook, and solid pitching from Chase Cruse and Josh Ring lead the Cards to a 10-0 win over UAB Sunday. The game was ended after the seventh by the 10 run rule, and gave the Cards the weekend series 2-1.
The shutout was the sixth of the season, tying the school record set in 1974 by a team coached by current pitching coach Jim Zerilla.
Cruse(3-1) allowed just two hits and a walk in his six innings, striking out two in the win. He threw just 54 pitches, retiring the side in the fifth on four pitches and six in the sixth. Ring allowed a hit and struck out two looking in his only inning of work.
Offensively, the six-run second began with back-to-back one out singles by DH Mark Jurich and right fielder Bill Gatti Jr. After a line-out by catcher Fernando Isa for the second out of the inning, second baseman Matt Jarboe singled home Jurich, and shortstop Adam Haley singled through the right side to load the bases for Hook's bomb.
Dave Williams Jr. was hit by the next pitch, third baseman Mike Budak reached on an error, and first baseman Morgan Bojorquez, in his second at bat of the inning, singled home Williams Jr. to end the scoring in the frame.
Cruse, who started for Louisville, loaded the bases on a walk, a single and a hit batter in the bottom of the second, but induced a nicely turned 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Louisville(29-25, 12-12) added to the lead with two in the top of the fifth. Budak singled to left, Bojorquez followed with a single down the left field line and Jurich ripped a ground rule double to the gap in right center, scoring Budak.
Gatti Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Bojorquez, giving the Cards an 8-0 advantage.
Haley was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth, his school record 14th time this season, and scored on a sacrifice fly deep to left field by Budak, making it 9-0 Cards.
Louisville added the final run in the seventh on an RBI double by Isa, scoring Kevin Fishback. Fishback entered the game as a pinch runner for Gatti Jr. who had drawn a one out walk.
All nine starters reached safely, and either scored or drove in a run. Hook, Bojorquez and Jurich each had two hits, while Haley scored twice.
The Cards went through five Blazer(24-26,6-18) hurlers, with starter Ross Dobbins(5-4) taking the loss. He was touched for six runs, five of which were earned, in two innings on six hits. He struck out two.
Only reliever Jeremy Hudson, who got the final two outs, one on a strikeout, escaped without giving up a run.
Louisville will host Morehead State on Tuesday at 6:00p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
