LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth en route to an 18-4 win over Morehead State Tuesday evening at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 30-25 on the season, marking just the eighth 30-win season in school history and the third in the last four years.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and already trailing 4-1, the Cardinals used seven walks, three hits and three wild pitches to score eight runs. Senior Matt Jarboe drove in two runs with a double to right field and junior Mike Budak knocked in one on a single. The other five runs were all scored on either walks or wild pitches. Ten straight batters reached base during the inning as the Cards broke the game wide open.
In the sixth, freshman Mark Jurich led the attack with a triple to left center to lead off the inning and then came to bat again later in the inning and pounded an RBI double to right center. Senior Bill Gatti Jr. and junior Fernando Isa followed Jurich's leadoff triple with a pair of singles before Jarboe double again to knock in Gatti for his third RBI of the game.
Morehead State erased a 1-0 Louisville lead in the second inning with a pair of runs on four hits, all singles, and then scored two more in the fifth to take the 4-1 lead, but that was all the Eagles would get.
Jurich finished with four hits and two RBI, Jarboe three hits and three RBI and Budak two hits and three RBI. Isa and sophomore Dave Williams Jr. each had a pair of singles for the Cards as they racked up 18 hits on the night.
Junior Garrett Estabrook (1-2) recorded his first win of the season as he pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Cards before handing the ball to junior Josh Ring who pitched two perfect innings to close the game out. Shawn Hall (0-6) took the loss for Morehead State.
The Cardinals finish out the regular season with a three-game Conference USA series with No. 8 Tulane this weekend. The first game will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
