Saint Louis starting pitcher Ben Hutton tossed a complete game shutout, leading the Billikens to a 2-0 win over Louisville in baseball action at Cardinal Stadium Saturday.
Hutton(3-2) was brilliant, giving up just four hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts in the nine inning effort. He allowed only two runners to reach second base in the contest.
Cardinal starter Denny Williams (3-4) pitched well, but took the loss, giving up just two runs-none earned, scattering 10 hits and only one walk, striking out five. Williams struck out the side in the third, whiffing five consecutive Bills in a stretch.
Saint Louis pushed across an unearned run in the first on a sacrifice fly to center by right fielder Jim Bredenkoetter, scoring leadoff hitter Kurt Evans who had reached on an error. Williams induced a double play to get out of a jam in the first, trailing 1-0.
The Billikens tallied another run in the fourth to take the 2-0 lead. Designated hitter Mike Orrico singled, after a foul ball was dropped by U of L third baseman Mike Budak, and advanced to third on a single by Bredenkoetter, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. First baseman Ben Caffey then drove in Orrico with a single down the left field line.
Right fielder Mark Jurich had the only extra-base hit for the Cards, doubling to the gap in right-center, with two out in the seventh.
U of L is now 16-13(2-3) on the year, while SLU improves to 11-11(2-3).
The teams will meet in the rubber game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals will send Josh Ring (2-2, 4.66) to the mound to face Saint Louis' Wes Jaillet(3-1, 5.51).
