The U of L baseball team erupted for a season high 15 hits, and starter Josh Ring tallied his fourth complete game of the season to lead the Cardinal baseball team to a 5-1 win over Saint Louis Sunday at Cardinal Stadium. Louisville wins the weekend series over the Billikens two games to one.
Louisville put a single run on the board in the second to take a 1-0 lead over the Bills. Right fielder Mark Jurich singled with one out, moved to third on a single to right by third baseman Mike Budak, and scored on a bloop single by left fielder Dave Williams Jr.
A three-spot in the fifth for the Cards increased the lead to 4-0. U of L cashed in on five singles in the frame. J.T. LaFountain singled home Williams, and catcher Fernando Isa stroked an 0-2 pitch to the gap with two out and the bases loaded, plating centerfielder Nate Smith and LaFountain. Senior second baseman Matt Jarboe padded the lead with his first career home run, a solo shot to right center with two out in the sixth, to give Louisville the 5-0 cushion.
Ring (3-2), a junior, gave up a single run with two out in the ninth, on seven hits and three walks, striking out five. He was perfect through three and didn't give up a hit until the fifth. He has gone the distance in all four of his starts this season, and the Cards posses 12 complete games on the season, including seven of its last nine. U of L has yet to go to the bullpen in six conference games.
SLU starter Wes Jaillet(3-2) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up five runs on 14 hits, while striking out 6 in the losing effort.
Williams Jr. lead the Cardinals with three hits, while LaFountain, Isa, Budak and Jarboe each had two knocks. All nine hitters in the lineup had a safety. Isa nailed SLU second baseman Nick Steiner at second attempting to steal to end the fourth. He has now pegged the last four that have attempted to swipe a bag.
The Cards are now 17-13, equalling its win total from last season, and evened the C-USA mark at 3-3. Saint Louis drops to 11-12(2-4).
