The Cincinnati Bearcats swept the University of Louisville Cardinal baseball team in a conference doubleheader in Ohio Sunday, 6-3 and 5-3.
Game One
In the first game of the doubleheader, Cincinnati(13-5, 2-1) used the longball to top the Cards 6-3, as left fielder Matt Singer and second baseman Kevin Wilson each hit home runs to lead the Bearcat attack.
UC used two bases-loaded walks and a fielder's choice to plate three runs in the second to put Cincy up 3-0. Louisville(14-12, 1-2) answered with a single run in the third. Left fielder Dave Williams Jr. singled, stole second, and was plated on DH Carlos De la Osa's sixth double of the season, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Singer then homered to center in the bottom of the third scoring third baseman Kevin Youkilis, who had singled, and Wilson hit his solo shot in the fourth to give UC a 6-1 lead.
Adam Haley doubled and scored on a pinch hit single by freshman J.T. LaFountain, and after a double play, De la Osa homered deep to right center in the seventh to close the scoring 6-3.
UC hurler Kenny Fields(3-0) went the distance, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three, picking up the win. U of L junior Josh Ring (2-2) also pitched a complete game, his third in as many starts, surrendering six runs on six hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts in the loss.
De la Osa, Haley and catcher Fernando Isa each had two hits for Louisville, who outhit the Bearcats 9-6.
Game Two
Cincinnati again jumped on top in the second game of the doubleheader, with one in the second and three in the third. Catcher Nate Fish singled home first baseman Craig Tewes who lead off the frame with a double in inning two. In the third, Singer grounded out, plating a run, and DH Chris Hamblen hit a two-run homer to right, his second in the series, putting the Bearcats up 4-0.
Louisville managed two in the top of the fourth to close the gap. Left fielder Bill Gatti Jr. doubled down the left field line and scored on an error, putting first baseman Morgan Bojorquez at first. Catcher Fernando Isa followed with a single and advanced to second on a throw home, and Bojorquez then scored on a ground out to the right side, slicing the lead to 4-2.
Fish homered to left leading off the bottom of the fourth to extend the UC lead to 5-2, and Bojorquez answered with a solo home run of his own to left center in the sixth, but it was not enough for the Cardinals.
Again both pitchers tossed complete games, with UC's Kyle DiEduardo(3-0) giving up two earned runs on five hits to go with five strikeouts. U of L's Denny Williams (3-3) was touched for all five runs on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts in his third complete game of the season, tying Ring and sophomore Mike Tisdale for the team lead.
The Cardinals will host Western Kentucky on Wednesday at 3:00p.m. in a mid week tilt before opening the home half of the C-USA season, hosting Saint Louis for three this weekend.
