
Baseball Sneaks Past Hilltoppers 4-1

Four runs in the first proved to be all Louisville would need to defeat Western Kentucky 4-1 in baseball action Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium.
Louisville batted around in the first inning, plating four unearned runs. After a walk to DH Carlos De la Osa with two out in the frame, first baseman Morgan Bojorquez reached on an error by left fielder Matt Fox. Third baseman Mike Budak followed with a walk to load the bases, and Junior catcher Fernando Isa singled in two runs. Freshman right fielder Mark Jurich ripped a double down the right field line, scoring two more and putting U of L ahead 4-0.
WKU third baseman Nick Turner reached on an error by his opposite number to lead off the second and scored on a double by catcher Ryan Cattell, putting the Hilltoppers on the board 4-1.
Louisville starter Mike Eilers (3-1) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up the one unearned run on six hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts, picking up the victory. Freshman Chase Cruse pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits to pick up the save, his second.
Western starter Kevin Sadowski was tagged with the loss, giving up all four unearned runs on three hits and four walks. He struck out four. Reliever Kurt Minnick pitched the final four innings giving up just one walk. U of L did not record a hit after the first inning. A single by Fox in the second extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
The win ties Cardinal Head Coach Lelo Prado with current assistant coach Jim Zerilla for second place on the all-time victory list at Louisville with 141. Zerilla was the head man from 1974-79. John Heldman, who coached from 1937-66 is first with 309 career wins.
Louisville opens the home portion of the C-USA schedule Friday in the first of three against Saint Louis. Game time has been changed to 3:00 p.m. The teams will meet Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
