Mike Tisdale tossed his team-leading fourth complete game of the season, leading the Cards to a 4-2 win over Saint Louis on Friday in Conference USA baseball action. Tisdale(5-2) gave up two earned runs on nine hits and no walks, striking out eight.
The win is the 142nd at U of L for Head Coach Lelo Prado, placing him in second place on the career win list at Louisville. He surpasses current assistant coach Jim Zerilla ('74-'79), and trails Dr. John Heldman Jr. who won 309 games from 1937 to 1966 as coach of the Cards.
In the first, right fielder Bill Gatti Jr. walked and scored when third baseman Mike Budak's single was mishandled by Billiken right fielder Jim Bredenkoetter, putting U of L up 1-0.
Bredenkoetter made up for his mistake with a solo home run to right in the fourth, tying the score at one.
Second baseman Matt Jarboe doubled to lead off the fifth, and after moving to third on a sacrifice by center fielder Nate Smith scored on a ground out by left fielder Dave Williams Jr., giving U of L a 2-1 lead.
The Billikens answered in the sixth, evening the score 2-2. Bredenkoetter doubled with two out and was plated on a single by first baseman Ben Caffey.
Gatti again started things off for the Cards, scorching his conference leading fifth triple down the left field line to open the sixth. Budak hit a deep fly ball to center that was dropped by SLU centerfielder Steve Moss, scoring Gatti and moving Budak to third. First baseman Morgan Bojorquez then hit an infield single between the pitcher's mound and first, and after a collision between the pitcher and first baseman, Budak scored for the final tally 4-2.
Dan Shouse(2-2) was the loser for SLU, tossing a complete game, four runs-three earned on six hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Tisdale has now gone 20.2 consecutive innings without a walk and has only walked three in his last 37.2 IP. He has picked up a win in his last four starts, including complete game wins in his last three.
Louisville improves to 16-12(2-2), while Saint Louis drops to 10-11(1-3).
The teams will meet Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
