LEXINGTON, Ky. - Miscues and longballs were the difference as Kentucky topped Louisville in baseball action 10-3 Wednesday.
Six of the 10 runs by the Cats (26-8-1) were unearned, due to two fielding errors and a passed ball on a third strike.
Louisville (10-23-1, 4-7-1) centerfielder Mike Hook led of the game by cranking a 3-2 pitch over the right-centerfield fence, as Louisville scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Shortstop Scott Kohler walked and scored on right fielder Paul Brown's double to left. Brown scored when catcher Tony Taylor singled to left.
Kentucky got on the board in the third as catcher John Wilson hit the first of his two home runs in the game. His two-run shot off Cardinal starter Todd Raithel cut the lead to 3-2. Raithel had five strikeouts in his three innings of work.
In the fourth, after Antonio Castellvi (1-2) easily picked up the first two outs, UK third baseman Vince Harrison was hit by an 0-2 pitch, and right fielder Gordon Tyler reached on an error that opened the floodgates for a four-run inning. Castellvi exited with the loss, despite all three of his runs being unearned on one hit in his two-thirds of an inning. Mike Gardner entered, getting the final out after surrendering a run on a hit and three walks. He pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs, two earned on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Wildcat starter Rob Corrado (3-1) pitched five innings, surrendering all three Cardinal runs on six hits, while walking just one and striking out seven to pick up the victory. Four reliever's combined to shutout U of L over the final four innings.
Wilson's second home run, another two-run blast, just cleared the fence in right in the sixth to give the Cats a 9-3 lead. He was 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs. Designated hitter Breck Price added a solo home run in the sixth for Kentucky.
Hook was 4-for-5 on the evening with a double to go with his homer. Kohler was 2-for-2 and drew three walks. Brad Mattingly and Sean Green each pitched a scoreless inning for Louisville.
The Cards host Memphis this weekend for a three game conference series, beginning Friday at 6:00 at Cardinal Stadium.
