LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jen Mead has been named assistant coach of the University of Louisville women's soccer team.
"Jen adds instant credibility to the goalkeeping position, and without question allows us to recruit a top-flight goalkeeper, " said Head Coach Karen Ferguson. "Her experiences with the National team are invaluable, and I feel we have hired the best female goalkeeping coach in the country."
Coach Mead comes to the Cardinals following a stint as Head Coach at Newton North High School in Newtonville, MA. Coaching there from 1997-1999, the team posted a 51-5-9 record. The nationally ranked `99 team went 20-1-3 and won the Massachusetts state championship.
Mead had a distinguished collegiate career, playing three years at Providence College, and her final year at George Mason. While at Providence, she was selected to the 1991 Big East All-Rookie team in basketball, and was conference MVP in 1993 in soccer, leading the Friars to the conference title. As a senior at GMU, she was NSCAA All-America, and college Goalkeeper of the Year.
Mead competed for the US National Team from 1993-1998, including the Nike Victory tour, USA's tour of Brazil and Residency camp before the 1995 World Cup. She graduated from Providence in 1994 with a Marketing and Communications degree.
A national search is currently underway to fill the second assistant coaching position. Ferguson was named to the head position in early January. The 2000 team will open the fall season at newly constructed Cardinal Park.
