Junior: As a junior, Shane qualified for his third BIG EAST championship. In the 500 freestyle, he finished with a time of 4:26.42 which was good for fourth place. He also finished fourth in the 1650-freestyle with a time of 15:34.4. Both of his times made the national B cut. He made the B-final in the 200- free with a time of 1:39.33.
Sophomore: As a sophomore, Shane was named All-BIG EAST and finished third in the 500-free in the BIG EAST A-final. He finished sixth in the BIG EAST 1650- free. He also made the B-final in the 200-free in 1:40.82. Shane was selected for the National Open Water Select Camp. He finished 18th in the 5K Open Water National with a time of just under hour at 59.05.
Freshman: Shane made waves for the Cardinals as a freshman handling the distance events. He represented the Cardinals at the US Olympic Trials. He was a BIG EAST Champion when he touched first in the grueling 1650-free. He was second in the 500-free as well. In fact, he set three school records with new standards in the 500-free, the 1000-free and the 1650, all at the 2008 BIG EAST.
Prep: Shane swam in the US Senior Nationals in the summer of 2007 prior to joining the Louisville roster from Clarkston, Mich. where he swam for the Oakland Live Y'ers and was coached by Jeff Cooper. He was the runner-up in the 1650-free and 500-free at the 2007 Spring NCSA Junior Nationals. He also finished third in the 1000-free and was selected for the NCSA All-Star Team. As part of this team, he competed at the NCSA All-American Meet winning titles in the 400-free, 1500-free and 200-fly and earned high point honors. He helped lead Oakland to a Speedo Championship Series Sectional title in 2006. He was also recruited by Minnesota and Florida.
Personal: He is the son of Dean and Nannette Lichtenberg. Major is exercise science. He was born May, 18, 1989.
Cardinal Highlight: Shane was a finalist in three different events at BIG EAST.
