Sophomore: In his sophomore campaign, Ruben provided depth in the freestyle events and in the relay events. Izarra was a key member of the 800-free relay squad that posted a victory at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships. He posted his best times at the Louisville Invitational in which he recorded the second best time in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.16. He also swam 45.84 in the 100 free and 4:30.70 in the 500 free at the Louisville Invitational. Ruben helped the 400 free relay squad post a third place finish against UNC with a team time of 3:02.16. In the Florida State meet, he finished sixth in the 200-free, going 1:43.16. Against Cincinnati, Ruben finished second in the 200 free with a mark of 1:40.17 and finished third in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.32. He swam at the Arena Pro Series in Charlotte, where he competed in the 200-meter freestyle with a 1:57.14 and the 400-meter freestyle with a 4:16.10.

Freshman: Ruben competes in the freestyle events, specifically the 200- and 500-freestyle races, and occasionally in several relays. He recorded his best time in the 200-free at the Michigan Invite, swimming it in 1:37.73, and in the 100-free, going 45.92. He went a 4:30.42 in the 500-free, but went a best time at the Conference Championships, coming in at 4:26.92. Ruben also recorded a 45.97 in the 100-free, and a B-cut time of 1:37.89 in the 200-free at AAC’s as an exhibition swimmer.

Ruben redshirted the 2012-2013 season.

Prep: Ruben came to the Cardinals from Valencia, Venezuela where he swam for Colegio de Abogados for Coach Fernando Parada. He attended Patria Soberaila High School. He competed at the Junior South American Championship as well as the Junior Central American Championships and was a member of the Junior Venezuelan National team. He also attended swim camps at Davie Nadadores in Florida.
