Junior: Carly Munchel had a breakthrough year as a junior. She was a scorer for the BIG EAST Championships for the first time and she did not disappoint. Munchel scored in every event at the championships, placing fourth in the 1650-freestyle in 16:38.29 also earning a life-time best, putting her as the fastest Cardinal in the event. She also placed fifth in the 500-freestyle in 4:50.09 another life- time best. Munchel's final event was the 200-butterfly where she made the B-final to place 11th in 2:02.71. Munchel put up fast times in the fall taper meet at the Purdue Invite. She won the 1650-freestyle in a time of 16:39.05, was sixth in the 500-freestyle in 4:54.30, seventh in the 200-butterfly in 2:04.10, and eigth in the 400-IM in 4:27.23. Munchel was awarded to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the third year in a row.
Sophomore: Despite knowing that she would not be competing at the BIG EAST Championships, Carly overcame summer shoulder surgery to have a breakout meet with all personal best times at the Ohio State Winter Invite. She swam the 500- and 1650-free in 4:53.90 and 16:49.28 respectively. She also swam the 400-IM in 4:23.77 and the 200-fly in 2:02.93. Carly continued to enhance the Cardinal distance program with great performances throughout the dual meet season. She completed a 1-5 sweep in the 500 free against UK with a time of 5:02.51. She also placed fifth in the 1000-free against Tennessee.
Freshman: Carly turned in key performances throughout the season highlighted by her first-place finish against Kentucky in the 1000-free, notching a time of 10:13.77. In the Indiana/Virginia Tech tri-meet at the Ralph Wright Natatorium, she was the top finisher for Louisville in the 1000-free with a time of 10:17.29. She swam exhibition at the BIG EAST meet in the 400-IM (4:33.00), 200-fly (2:04.56) and would have finished in the top 15 in the 1650 when she put up a 17:04.22.
Prep: Carly joins the Cardinals from York, Pennsylvania where she swam for the West Shore YMCA coached by Mike Gobrect. Carly's personal best finishes were first in the 500-free at the YMCA states with a time of 5:02 and third in the 200-fly, 1500-free and 800-free at the YMCA Nationals.
Personal: Daughter of Mark and Kim Munchel. Born October 18, 1991. Her intended major is elementary education.
