Bio
Graduate: Alena came back to use her final year of eligibility. She was able to compete against Tennessee where she took third in the 200 fly (2:01.97) and third in the 100 fly (55.21) as well as swim the second leg of the 400 Free Relay that came in second with a time of 3:24.70 with her adding a split of 51.81. An injury prevented her from further competition in 2022-23.
Senior: Alena Kraus qualified for the NCAA Championships, where she posted a time of 1:47.08 in the 200 freestyle and was 15th in the 200 butterfly finals with a time of 1:54.83, earning Honorable Mention All-American Honors. At the ACC Championships, she scored 22 points at the meet. She was part of the 800 free relay team that won bronze, posting an anchor split of 1:46.75. She finished 14th in the 200 freestyle final with a time of 1:46.69 and was ninth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.08. In the 100 free, she was 17th with a time of 49.11. In the dual season, she had a win as part of the 200 medley relay versus Xavier with an anchor time of 23.76. At Tennessee, she was fourth in the 200 fly (2:00.33) and third in the 100 fly (55.28), while helping the 400 free relay team to a second place finish with a split of 50.57. At the Purdue Invitational, she was on the winning 200 free relay team and was fourth in the 400 Medley Relay (52.53 split) and fourth in the 200 fly (1:56.69). At Indiana, she was third in the 100 fly (53.98), second in the 200 fly (1:56.77) and helped the Cards touch third in both the 200 medley relay (22.70 split) and the 400 free relay (50.03 leadoff split). She had a big win in the Kentucky meet, when she touched first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.95 and was a part of the winning 400 free relay team, leading off the race with a split of 49.39. Against Cincinnati, she won the 200 free with a time of 1:46.21 and was third in the 100 freestyle (49.62). An excellent student, Elena was named to the AD Honor Roll, as a Red & Black Scholar and as a Dean's Scholar.
Junior: Kraus picked up right where she left off after the abrupt end to her sophomore season and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third-straight year. At NCAAs, she placed 10th in the 200 butterfly (1:54.14) and 19th in the 200 freestyle (1:45.96). Kraus also anchored UofL’s eighth-place 200 freestyle relay in 22.12 and split 48.28 on the 400 freestyle relay that finished 10th. At the ACC Championships, she finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:46.30), sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:55.89), and 17th in the 100 butterfly (52.81). She also anchored the 200 freestyle relay in 22.43 and the 400 freestyle relay in 48.67 that both earned bronze, as well as led-off the fourth-place 800 freestyle relay in 1:46.03. Kraus posted six top-3 finishes during the abbreviated 2020-21 dual meet season. She won the 100 butterfly and was the runner-up in the 200 freestyle against Kentucky while taking second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly and 100 butterfly versus Notre Dame. Following wins in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle against Cincinnati, she was named the ACC Swimmer of the Week on February 2. For her efforts in the classroom, she was named to the ACC All-Academic Team.
Sophomore: Kraus continued her high-performing ways as a sophomore, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 200 butterfly before the meet was cancelled. At the ACC Championships, she finished fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:55.70), sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:46.34), and 12th in the 100 butterfly (52.95) while splitting a 1:45.37 as a member of the Cardinals’ 800 freestyle relay that earned bronze. Kraus was the runner-up in both butterfly events at the Purdue Invitational before going on to win the B-final of the 200-meter butterfly (2:10.06) at the Toyota U.S. Open where she also placed 11th in the 100-meter butterfly (59.19). During the dual meet season, she registered nine top-five finishes and picked up wins against Indiana and Xavier. For her performances in both the pool and in the classroom, Kraus was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and awarded ACC Honor Roll and CSCAA Scholar All-America honors. She was also named to the CSCAA All-American team in the 200 butterfly.
Freshman: Kraus proved to be one of the Cards’ top performers throughout the course of her freshman season, qualifying to the NCAA Championships as a member of the 800 free relay and individually in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 fly. She earned All-American honors as a member of the sixth place 800 free relay team and also scored individually at NCAAs with a 14th place finish in the 200 fly (1:55.34). At ACCs, she became a bronze medalist in the 200 fly, touching third with a personal best time of 1:55.06. She also earned a silver medal as part of the Cards’ 800 free relay team. Additionally, she scored individually with a 14th place finish in the 100 fly (53.57) and 18th place finish in the 500 free (4:45.36). At the IU Invitational, Kraus won the 200 free (1:46.06), while finishing second in the 200 fly (1:55.73) and fourth in the 100 fly (52.52). Throughout the dual meet season, she tallied eight top-three finishes for the Cards, highlighted by a pair of second place showings in the 500 free and 200 fly in the victory over Northwestern. For her efforts in the classroom, Kraus was named to the All-ACC Academic Team. Kraus competed in the 100m fly (1:00.39) and 200m fly (2:12.81) at Phillips 66 Nationals where she also swam a leg on the Cards’ fifth-place 4x100m free relay team.
Prep: Kraus is a product of Makos Aquatics club out of Gainesville, Fla. under head coach Leonard Kraus. She also swam for Gainesville High School with coach Rob Ramirez. She is a seven-time FHSAA 3A state champion and nine-time All-American. She also qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 200 fly and has competed in the finals of both winter and summer USA Swimming Junior Nationals. She captained both her high school and club teams and holds multiple records at each level. Kraus is extremely versatile, holding best times of 22.92 in the 50 free, 49.49 in the 100 free, 1:46.86 in the 200 free, 4:46.62 in the 500 free, 54.37 in the 100 fly and 1:58.41 in the 200 fly.
