Offense Rolls as Cardinals Claim Opener Against Seton Hall
March 06, 2026 | Baseball
Louisville (8-5) had 10 different players score a run in the victory, tallying 11 hits and taking advantage of 11 more free passes.
Ethan Eberle (2-0) was the beneficiary of the early offense, earning his second win of the season. The southpaw gave up just one run over 5.0 innings of work, striking out seven.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals blew the game open in the second thanks in part to a big two-out defensive miscue.
The first three batters of the inning reached, but a flyout and a fielder's choice pushed just one run across. However, Alex Alicea's groundball to second with two out was misplayed, allowing a run to score and keeping the inning alive.
Louisville would take full advantage of the error. Kyle Campbell was hit by a pitch to force home the third run of the inning and Tague Davis had a high pop-up get lost in the sun, bringing three more runs across the plate. Griffin Crain then punctuated the seven-run frame with a run-scoring single.
Seton Hall (4-5) got a two-out run in the third, but the Cardinals would get back to work at the plate in the bottom half. Alicea had a sacrifice fly to drive home Ben Slanker, and Lucas Moore followed with a single that scored Kade Elam.
Two batters later, Davis drove in three with one swing. The sophomore tallied his sixth homer of the season to put the Cardinals into double figures on the scoreboard. After a walk to Jimmy Nugent, Crain deposited one over the right-centerfield wall for his first collegiate homer.
The Cards would put it into cruise control from there. Eberle kept the Pirates off the board in the fourth and fifth before turning it over to Tanner Thomas and Anthony Karbowski, who each pitched scoreless innings in their collegiate debuts.
Drew Freeman finished off the day with a run-scoring double in the sixth for his first collegiate hit and RBI.
Davis and Crain each went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in six and three runs, respectively. Bayram Hot added a multi-hit game as well.
Louisville and Seton Hall continue the weekend series on Saturday. First pitch has been moved to 2 p.m. ET due to rain in the forecast.
