Louisville Takes Down No. 13 Stanford, 8-3 in ACC Opener
February 27, 2026 | Softball
The Cardinals move to 13-3 on the year with their first ACC win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team (13-3, 1-0 ACC) upset No. 13/16-ranked Stanford (10-5, 0-1 ACC) 8-3 to start Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday night at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville's Anna Wise (4-2) took the win in the circle, allowing only three hits, one run and striking out two batters over four innings. Alyssa Zabala started the game strong, allowing only three hits and two runs over three innings.
The Cardinal offense found the scoreboard in the first inning, while the pitching staff kept UofL off the board with great defense.
After a home run by the Cardinal in the top of the third, Louisville found the board in the fifth, courtesy of a two-run shot to deep right field by Bri Despines that brought home Easton Lotus. An infield single by Ava Venturelli plated Taylor Monroe and Camryn Lookadoo to give the Cards a 4-2 lead going into the sixth.
The bats stayed hot going into the home half of the sixth as Louisville posted another four-run inning. Lookadoo launched a three-run homer to left field, the first of her career. Venturelli added another infield single that brought home Monroe from second and put the Cards ahead 8-2 heading into the seventh.
After a leadoff home run for Stanford, the Cardinal looked to close the gap after an infield single in the seventh. However, a double play connection between Riley Janda, Lotus and Lookadoo put the game away and gave the Cards an 8-3 victory.
Venturelli and Lookadoo finished the evening with three RBIs apiece, tallying three hits between the two of them. Despines went 3-for-3 at the plate, including her second homer of the season, which gave her two RBIs on the night.Â
Louisville will continue its series against Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. ET at Ulmer Stadium on ACCNX.Â
