The Cards recorded their fourth clean sheet of the season in the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville women's soccer team (5-1-0) kept up its winning ways with the 2-0 victory over Coastal Carolina (1-3-0) Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Louisville scored twice in the second half to win its fourth-straight game and stay undefeated during the current homestand.
Taylor Morris broke the second half deadlock with her first career goal in the 51st minute. The Cardinals got breathing room in the 83rd minute as Mackenzie Geigle scored for the fourth-straight game to secure the win. Louisville's defense was on point as it picked up a clean sheet for the second-straight game and the fourth time in six games this season.
The first half was scoreless for just the second time this season as the Cardinals and Chanticleers were unable to get on the scoresheet. The Cardinals best chance came in the 29th minute as Grace Maddox sent a rocket of a volley on net but it was deflected away by the Coastal keeper.
The Cardinals did not take long to score once the second half began. The play got started by Emersen Jennings when she ran down a Coastal defender and forced a Louisville throw in. Off the throw-in, Liza Suydam sent a cross into the box that was flicked on by AG Gibson. Morris was able to beat her defender to the ball and sent it into the back of the net for her first career goal and put the Cards up 1-0.
Coastal upped the pressure offensively as it looked for the equalizer. The best chance came in the 78th minute as the Chanticleers came up on the counter attack. Elanor Ashton sent a screamer on net but Erynn Floyd was up to the task to make the save and deflect the ball out of play.
Moments later, the Cardinals got their second goal to put the game away. Amelia Swinarski sent a corner towards the far post and Geigle was waiting for it. She got behind her defender and headed the ball into the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Swinarski tallied her ninth assist of the year and the Cardinals put the cap on the 2-0 win.
Louisville's homestand goes into its final week with two more games at Lynn Stadium coming up. First up will be a Thursday night affair with Kent State on September 4. The two teams will square off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
