BERLIN, Germany -- Competition at the 2025 World University Games continues in Berlin as the University of Louisville swimmers take the international stage.
The meet spans seven days and runs through Wednesday, July 23.
Team USA qualified first in the 4x100 Mixed Medley relay prelims when David King (53.91), Nate Germonez (1:00.12), Ella Welch (58.55) and Isabel Ivey (53.76) turned in a time of 3:46.34 to advance to the finals. The Americans won the final with a 3:44.40 to earn Welch her first gold medal of the Games.
UofL's Kim Herkle was on Germany's 4x100 Mixed Medlay Relay team that qualified fourth with a 3:51,13 and then finished sixth in the finals, clocking in a 3:51.13.
Also in the 4x100 Mixed Medley Relay, South Africa swam 3:51.25 to qualify fifth helped by  UofL's Guy Brooks who swam the butterfly leg for RSA, posting a 53.18. In the finals, Brooks helped his native country to a bronze medal finish with a 3:48.34.Â
Gustavo Saldo qualified sixth i nthe 200M butterfly with a tie of 1:58.36 in the prelim to advance to the semifinal where he finished ninth overall with a time of 1:57.89 for his native Brazil.
Late Thursday, Louisville's Denis Petrashov won gold in the 100 breast, besting the field with a time of 59.32 for his native Kyrgyzstan. Â Fellow Cardinal Julia Dennis touched fifth in the finals of the 100M freestyle with a time of 54.36 for Team USA. Caroline Larsen was fourth in the 50M butterfly with a time of 25.39 with teammate Ella Welch right on her heels with the fifth-place time of 25.48. Â
