
No. 70-ranked Cards Pull Upset of No. 35 Clemson

With the score tied 3-3, Alice Otis clinches the match in three sets
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --The University of Louisville women's tennis team pulled off an upset of No. 35 Clemson with a 4-3 win that came down to the No. 1 court Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals got off to a strong start, taking the point from the doubles matches. The biggest win in the opening matches was the upset performance from Berta Miret and Lika Peresypkina, who defeated the 47th ranked duo of Romana Cisovska and Candela Yecora 6-4 at No. 2. Allie Gretkowski and Alice Otis came up short against the No. 32-ranked duo of Amelie Smejkalova and Gaia Parravicini 6-2 at No. 1. At No. 3, Elena Noguero and Elisabeth Iila beat Sophia Hatton and Annabelle Davis 6-0 to clinch the doubles point.
The Cardinals took the first singles point when Elena Noguero defeated Artemis Aslanisvili 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. But the Tigers pushed back as the Cardinals dropped matches on courts 5 and 6. The Cards came back when Allie Gretkowski won at No. 4 in three sets (7-5, 6-2, 6-2). On court 2, Lika Peresypkina fought hard in her match but came up short against Annabelle Davis (6–7,6-7) to knot the score at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 1 court battle between UofL's Alice Otis and Sophie Hatton. Otis won the first set 6-4 but lost a tight second set 7-5 and then held on to win 6-4 to clinch the victory.Â
The Cardinals are now 11-8 overall and 3-7 against ACC opponents. Clemson moves to 13-9 with this loss.
The Cardinals will continue ACC play at home on Friday, April 11, with a 4:00 pm match against Syracuse.
