Cards Stumble Against Virginia Tech

Louisville falls 16-7 to Virginia Tech in an ACC matchup Saturday at UofL Lacrosse Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team fell to Virginia Tech 16-7 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.

The Cardinals drop to 4-4 (1-2 ACC) while the Hokies improve to 7-2 (2-1 ACC).

Lauren Figas led Louisville's offense with three goals, while Negai Nakazawa scored twice and registered an assist. Reese Whiteman and Rian Adkins each contributed one goal. J Pleck (4-4) tallied nine saves.

The teams played through five minutes before Figas found the back of the net with an assist from Nakazawa to give the Cards a 1-0 lead, but the Hokies responded with three goals to close the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

After a pair of Virginia Tech goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter, Louisville fought back, finding goals from Whiteman, Figas, and Nakazawa. Despite the Cardinals' efforts, the Hokies maintained control, taking a 6-4 lead into halftime.

Louisville's offense continued after the break with Nakazawa cutting the lead to one. The Hokies quickly answered with a goal by Lauren Render to extend their lead. The Cardinals tied the game 7-7 with back-to-back goals from Figas, and Adkins, but the Hokies responded with a 9-0 scoring run, closing out the game with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter.

Virginia Tech held advantages in shots (37-29) and shots on goal (25-16), while Louisville led in draw controls (14-11). Olivia Scroggie led the Cardinals with five draw controls while Nakazawa and Pleck collected three ground balls apiece. Mia Pozzi paced the Hokies' offense with five goals and two assists while Maeve Obrist posted nine saves.
Louisville will return to action on March 15, traveling to face top-ranked Boston College at 12 p.m. ET in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
