Rian Adkins scores a career-high four goals, J Pleck collects 16 saves to lead Louisville past Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville lacrosse team defeated Vanderbilt 13-9 Wednesday afternoon at Vanderbilt Lacrosse Stadium.

Rian Adkins delivered a career-high four goals and dished out an assist to lead the Cardinals' offense. Izzy Seikel registered her first hat trick of the season and Reese Whiteman scored twice to help Louisville's offense produce a season high in goals. J Pleck collected a career-best 16 saves as the Cards improved to 4-3 on the season.

"This was a great team win," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter, "We made plays at key times and that was great to see. J Pleck was outstanding once again, making saves and leading the defense."

The Cardinals jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal from Adkins in the opening minute of the game. The junior midfielder then set up Seikel four minutes later to put her team up 2-0. Maggie McMahon and Negai Nakazawa continued the Cardinals' offense to take a 4-0 lead. Vanderbilt broke through with a goal by Nancy Hollerton with 2:41 left in the first quarter.

Vanderbilt (2-4) rattled off three more unanswered goals in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Adkins stopped the run with 21 seconds left in the frame to put the Cardinals back on top 5-4 entering halftime.

The third quarter saw Louisville extend its lead to 7-4 with goals by Seikel and Reese Whiteman. The Commodores stopped the run to cut the lead to two goals, but Seikel notched her third score of the game with a feed from Lauren Figas. A minute later, Figas tallied a goal after a pass from Sophie Macleod. Adkins completed the third quarter scoring, this time with an assist from Seikel to make the score 10-5.

The Commodores started the final frame with a pair of goals from Brooke Baker and Kemper Robinson to pull within three, but McMahon found the back of the net on a free position shot to push Louisville's lead back to four. Vanderbilt countered again with back-to-back goals in a 90-second span to cut the lead to two. The Cards quickly answered when Adkins converted on a free position shot.

After Erin Nicholson gained possession on the ensuing draw control, Whiteman delivered her second goal of the contest, bringing the score to 13-9.

In the game, the teams delivered 31 shots apiece with Vanderbilt owning a 25-23 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals held a 17-9 advantage in draw controls with Olivia Scroggie earning a game-high five. Adkins and Pleck collected three groundballs each to lead Louisville. Brooke Baker paced the Commodores with three goals while Molly Joyce had nine saves and Emme Martin posted one stop.

"Our defense made adjustments when Vanderbilt gave us different looks," said Teeter. "Our draw controls were crucial in this win and offense scored big goals at key times with a big insurance goal at the end by Reese Whiteman."

The Cardinals will return to Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday when Virginia Tech visits UofL Lacrosse Stadium for a 12 p.m. matchup.
