Louisville advances to 17-7 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated in-state opponent EKU in five innings this evening, ending with a 10-2 final score. The Cardinals move to 17-7 on the season with a three-game series against No. 16/17 Virginia Tech on deck.
The Cards were able to get the offense going after a clean inning from starter Alyssa Zabala to kick things off. Easton Lotus led off with a walk and stole second, followed by Chelsea Mack getting hit by a pitch to put her on first. Char Lorenz reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Lotus out at third. With two on and two outs, Madison Pickens drew a walk to load the bases, setting up Taylor Monroe, who launched a grand slam to left field, putting Louisville up 4-0.
EKU got their first baserunner of the game as M. Rutan led off the second inning with a walk. However, J. McLeod struck out swinging and was part of an unconventional double play as Rutan was caught stealing at second.
Camryn Lookadoo started the homestretch of the inning with a single through the left side and quickly moved to second on a stolen base. A wild pitch advanced Lookadoo to third, putting a runner in scoring position, but the Cards couldn't capitalize.
EKU got some momentum, singling through the left side to start the third frame. However, a 6-4-3 double play quickly erased it and gave the Cards their second double play of the evening and kept the score at 4-0 through the third inning.
The fourth inning saw another spark offensively for Louisville, taking advantage of EKU's defensive miscues to extend their lead. Monroe grounded out to the pitcher, but Grant reached on a fielding error at second. Riley Janda pinch-ran and stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Lookadoo then laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing Janda home for an unearned run.
The Cardinals kept the pressure on as Alexander singled to left, advancing Lookadoo to third. Lotus followed with a clutch two-RBI single up the middle, scoring both runners and extending the lead to 7-0.
The Colonels found themselves on the board in the top of the fifth following an RBI triple and an RBI single to bring the score to 7-2.
Louisville continued to capitalize on EKU's defensive struggles, adding four more runs to the lead. Monroe led off the fifth inning with a double up the middle. Grant grounded out to short, but Lookadoo reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Monroe to score. Alexander followed with an infield single to third, moving Lookadoo to second.
Lotus kept the rally going with a single to third, advancing to second on the throw and driving in another unearned run. Williams then delivered an RBI double to left, scoring Alexander to end the game early with a 10-2 final score in five innings.
The Cards will return to Ulmer Stadium on Friday as they host ranked ACC opponent, Virginia Tech in a three-game series from March 14-16. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on the ACCNX.
