Cards fall 20-4 to second-ranked Tar Heels in their first home loss of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 20-4 to No. 2 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
The Cards drop to 3-3 (1-2 ACC) after suffering their first home loss of the season while the Tar Heels improve to 5-0 (2-0).
Â
Abigail Cole delivered a pair of goals while Charlotte Jackson and Rian Adkins also scored for the Cardinals. J Pleck (3-3) tallied five saves in the first half with Hanna John collecting four in the fourth quarter.
Â
North Carolina opened its offense early with six goals in the first seven minutes of the game before the Cardinals broke through with Cole's first goal of the contest. The Tar Heels answered with a pair of goals by Chloe Humphrey to close the first quarter with an 8-1 lead.
Â
Louisville dialed up its attack in the second quarter, firing off seven shots, four of which landed on target, only to be turned back by North Carolina goalie Betty Nelson. Pleck made four stops in the second quarter, but the Tar Heels used goals from Olivia Vergano and Kaleigh Harden to take a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Â
The second half started with UNC again jumping on the scoreboard quickly with a goal by Kiley Mattice to make the score 11-1. Four minutes later, Adkins notched her fifth goal of the season. The Tar Heels rattled off five unanswered goals to close the third quarter up 16-2.
Â
North Carolina extended its scoring run with three more goals to start the fourth quarter before Charlotte Jackson struck for Louisville midway through the frame. The Tar Heels answered once more before Cole connected on a free position shot with under two minutes remaining in the game for the 20-4 final
Â
In the game, the Tar Heels held a 29-12 advantage in shots on goal with 17 draw controls to Louisville's nine. UNC's Chloe Humphrey led all players with three goals in the game. Lauren Figas collected a game-high five draw controls.
"North Carolina is a really good team, they will probably compete for a national championship," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. "We threw a lot at them today. Our start wasn't the cleanest, we weren't ready for their continued pressure. And when we did get to the ball, we had some turnovers, really not valuing the ball, but then we worked through it and battled the whole game. We got a lot of players into the game today. A lot of players got to see the elite level for the first time and that will pay dividends down the road."
Â
Louisville will take a break from ACC play with a midweek game at Vanderbilt on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
