No. 7 Volleyball Beats Florida State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kalyssa Blackshear, Cara Cresse and Hannah Sherman each had eight blocks to power the No. 7-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Florida State on Thursday night in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Louisville won 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 25-19 for its 21st win of the season, moving to 21-4 overall and 13-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. To add their eight blocks, Cresse and Blackshear both posted double-digit kills with Cresse tabbing 10 and Blackshear adding 13. Blackshear and Sherman combined for six blocks on the night. Outside hitter Payton Petersen and setter Nayelis Cabello each grabbed their eighth double-double of the year. Petersen posted 13 kills and 10 digs with Cabello recording 41 assists and a career-high 17 digs. UofL served five aces in the win with one each coming from Petersen, Cabello, Kamden Schrand, Chloe Chicoine and Hannah Kenny. Chicoine also logged nine kills and 15 digs while libero Schrand dug 14 balls. UofL had 51 kills, hit .196 with five aces and 16 blocks.
Florida State (13-11, 7-8 ACC) was led by outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua who knocked down 20 kills and 11 digs. Filimaua served the Seminoles' three aces, and setter Lily Nicholson had a team-high 17 digs. The Seminoles had 53 kills, hitting .159 with three aces and nine blocks.
Louisville will return to L&N Arena on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. to take on No. 14 Miami. Senior day festivities will follow the match as the Cards honor Cara Cresse and Molly Wilson.
Set 1: Florida State 20, Louisville 25
Florida State started out the match on a 4-0 run that was quickly answered with a 3-0 run by Louisville. The Seminoles led 15-12 at the media break after a slew of tight scoring. A kill from Cresse, a setter dump by Cabello and a solo block by Cresse tied the score at 15 as FSU used its first timeout. Petersen's service ace gave the Cards their first lead of the set at 16-15, but the teams continued to trade points until UofL eventually got out to a 22-19 lead. Blackshear and Sherman teamed up for a block to give Louisville set point at 24-20, and Sherman hammered home a kill to win the set 25-20.
Set 2: Florida State 25, Louisville 19
FSU again started with a 4-0 run but three errors by the Noles and a kill by Petersen tied the score at 4-all. Florida State used up its first timeout while ahead 13-12 but after giving up two straight kills to Blackshear and Petersen. The Seminoles extended their lead to 19-17 as the Cards took their first timeout of the set. FSU got to set point after a kill and an attack error by UofL gave Florida State the set at 25-19.
Set 3: Florida State 19, Louisville 25
After four ties in the last seven points, Louisville took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout off of a kill by Chicoine. The Cards went on a 3-0 scoring run on kills from Cabello and Chicoine and another block between Sherman and Blackshear to lead 18-14 and force FSU's first timeout. The run continued to 6-0 on an ace from Cabello, a third block connection and a kill by Sherman for UofL's largest lead of the night at 21-14. A service error from the Seminoles put Louisville at set point 24-17 and a kill by Cresse ended the set 25-19.
