Cards Come Up Short in OT Against No. 24 Virginia
October 04, 2025 | Football
Cooper Ranvier's career-long 50-yard field goal with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 24. The Cardinal defense then held the Cavalier offense as time ran out to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Ranvier kicked his second field goal of the day to give the Cards the lead, but Virginia secured the win with 2-yard rushing touchdown by J'Mari Taylor.
Quarterback Miller Moss finished the game 34-for-48 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Chris Bell set career highs for the second straight game, finishing with 12 catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
The Louisville defense ended with nine TFLs led by D'Angelo Hutchinson with 11 total tackles, while JoJo Evans Jr. and TJ Quinn added with nine tackles each.
Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm said:
"It was a disappointing day. When you give them 14 points on offense, it is really disturbing and disappointing. So that falls on me. The execution on certain things was disappointing and shouldn't happen – like dropping a ball on a simple toss to get a first down and forcing balls when things aren't there – can't happen. Not every play is going to be open and work perfectly, so you have to take a sack or step up and run. There are a lot of things we need to do so, obviously, I am not doing a good job of practicing those things for them to show up. We can't give the other team 14 points. Did we play hard until the end? Yeah. Did we come back and tie the game at the end? Yeah. When these things happen, you have to let these wounds sting and let them sting for a while. It has to burn and let it really bother you. If it doesn't bother you, then you shouldn't be playing football or coaching football. Losses are going to happen but give people 14 points like that is very disappointing. We have to coach that better, analyze it and coach the little details of it, practice throwing the ball away, stepping up and running the ball, taking the sack, finding the checkdown, catching simple balls. There are a lot of things -- like getting dumb penalties and being more efficient up front – to work on. We still had a chance to win at the end and didn't come through on a pass in the flat that we have to throw and catch. It is a loss that hurts, and we will try improve and get better and move on to our next game."
