Cards Remain Undefeated After Monday Doubleheader

Louisville picks up wins against Northwestern and Xavier to advance to 4-0 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins this afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, defeating Northwestern 5-2 and Xavier 4-1 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
"Northwestern played a good doubles match," said Louisville head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "They took it to us, but the way the guys responded and handled the pressure and played good singles, and we had a good start in a lot of the sets, we were able to take Northwestern. Playing doubleheaders are always tough. Two good teams, coming over and then two hours later playing another match, I've always appreciated how hard the guys work and how hard they play the second match, even though they just won a tough, emotional first match. I'm excited. We finished the first weekend 4-0 and now it's only going to get tougher."
Northwestern opened doubles play with a 6-1 win on Court 3 by Carter Pate and Vincent Yang over Enrique Peña and Natan Rodrigues. A 6-2 victory by Saiprakash Goli and Chad Miller over Will Mayew and Piet Steveker on Court 2 clinched the doubles point for the Wildcats and gave them an early lead in the match.
The Cards bounced back in a big way as the match shifted to singles play, as Andre' Steinbach and Rodrigues each won their match in two sets. Avendaño came back after losing his first set to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Court 4, putting Louisville up 3-1.Â
On Court 3, Mayew finished off Pate 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, winning the Cards their fourth point of the afternoon and clinching the match for Louisville.Â
Steveker gutted out a win in three sets on Court 6, a match that included a tiebreaker in the second set. With his 6-0, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 win, the Cards secured a 5-2 victory in the front half of their doubleheader.
The Cardinals continued their momentum into the second match of day, securing the doubles point after the pairing of Russell Lokko and Enrique Pena defeated Christian Gonzalez and Kyle Totorica of the Musketeers, 6-3.
In singles action, Steinbach made quick work of Xavier's Ryan Cahill 6-2, 6-0 on Court 1 to extend the Louisville lead.
On Court 3, Avendaño prevailed in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to give him his third singles win on the young season. Steveker closed out the match for the Cards as he defeated Marco Pennelli 6-1, 6-3 on Court 4 to give Louisville its second win on the day.
The Cardinals will hit the road for the first time this season as they head up North to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Louisville will face third-ranked Ohio State on Friday with the first serve slated for 10 a.m. ET.
